CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF SHORTAGE OF ARTISANS ON THE GROWTH OF THE CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Shortage of artisans pose a great threat to the growth of the construction companies in Lagos State and this can be attributed to the youth of nowadays inactive in taken up various trades within the construction industry. The aim of this study is to assess the causes and effects of shortage of artisans in the construction companies in Lagos state, Nigeria, so as to ameliorate the negative impact. The objectives of the study are: to identify the causes of the shortage of artisans on the growth of the construction companies in Lagos State and to assess the effects of the shortage of the artisans on the growth of the construction companies in Lagos State. Simple random sampling technique was used and questionnaires were administered to forty-three (43) construction companies in Lagos State. The data collected were analyzed using relative importance index and severity index. From the findings of this study, it was discovered that the key causes that contributed most to the shortage of artisans in Lagos State were: job insecurity among artisans, youth inactivity in taken up various trades, poor safety and health measures on construction site and preference for migrant craftsmen from neighboring West African countries. On the effects, the study discovered that the menace of artisan’s shortage had led the youth riding Keke Maruwa, instead of practicing their vocations, high accident rate and poor growth. The study recommendations are as follows: the mind of the youth in Lagos State should be sensitized, reoriented and encouraged towards taking up various skilled role within the construction industry, also government at all levels should invest in infrastructure projects.
