IMPACT OF BOARD CHARACTERISTICS ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PERFORMANCE OF LISTED OIL AND GAS COMPANIES IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The study examines the impact of board characteristics on the corporate social responsibility performance of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria. The study used a sample size of seven (7) out of twelve (12) downstream oil and gas companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) as at December 2023. Relevant data for the study was extracted from the annual reports and accounts of the sampled companies for a period of twelve (12) years (2011 – 2022). The data generated was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Generalized Least Square (GLS) regression. The results show that board size, female directors have insignificant impact on corporate social responsibility performance of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria. Based on the results found, the study concludes that the board attributes of the listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria affect corporate social responsibility performance. The study therefore recommends, among other things, that the management of listed oil and gas in Nigeria should get more involved with corporate social responsibility performance to create a good relationship with shareholders and also, see corporate social responsibility performance as an integral part of their organization. Furthermore, the study recommends need for increased corporate governance interest in promoting corporate social responsibility performance.
