EFFECT OF CASH MANAGEMENT ON BUDGET PERFORMANCE OF RIVER BASIN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITIES IN NIGERIA
Abstract
In pursuants of increase quality of financial reporting, Nigeria adopted International Financial Given the present global economic challenges, the role of corporate institutions in improving national economic development cannot be over emphasized. However, previous studies revealed that, several government institutions failed as a result of poor budget performance. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of cash management on budget performance of Nigerian River Basin Development Authority. The targeted population of this study included all the twelve (12), Nigerian River Basin Development Authorities as at 31st December, 2020.which was used as sample. Using longitudinal research design to define the structure and the strategy of the study, the required data were obtained from the financial statement of the Authorities for the period of five years (2015-2020). The data obtained were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of the analyses revealed a positive and significant relationship between cash inflow management and budget performance, and cash outflow management and budget performance. However, cash reserve management revealed a negative but insignificant relationship with budget performance of the authorities. Therefore, the study concluded that, cash management has significant effect on the budget performance of the Nigerian River basin Development Authorities. In order for the authorities to improve budget performance, the study recommended that, the management of the River Basin should pay more attention to the level of the cash inflow management and cash outflow management through prudent spending since they were found to have a positive effect on the budget performance of the authority. While shifting focus from cash reserve since it has a negative effect on budget performance of the authority.
